Brief Description This painting in pen and ink and wash is of a man in military uniform, leaning on a rifle and with a sword and scabbard attached to his belt. Identified as Captain O'Connell of the 65th Second Yorkshire North Riding Regiment, this painting is a copy, with variations, of an original painting by artist J A Gilfillan, who painted it in the 1840s. T W Downes made this copy as an illustration for his book "Old Whanganui", published in 1915. Chapter III, page 275.
