This is a composite watercolour painting of seven steamships and two ship's flags. At upper left is an oval-shaped watercolour of the "S.S. City of Melbourne"; at upper centre, a small, rectangular watercolour of the "S.S. Balclutha"; at upper right, an oval watercolour of the "City of Adelaide"; at centre left, a small, circular watercolour of a red & blue ship's flag; at centre, a large, oval watercolour of the "S.S. Wonga Wonga"; at centre right, a small, circular watercolour of a ship's flag with the Union Jack in centre, encircled by nine stars; at lower left, an oval watercolour of the "S.S. Auckland"; at lower centre, a small, rectangular watercolour of the "P.S. Williams" and at lower right, an oval watercolour of the "S.S. Rangatira".
All the steamships are painted at sea, with coastlines in background and with a wreath of leaves painted in gold encircling each image. The titles of each watercolour are inscribed beneath each image, with the main title at lower centre and artist's signature at lower right. The watercolours have been painted on card that has been glued to a linen backing.
