Name/Title BANNER; ST JOSEPH
Brief Description This heavily embroidered banner comes from St Marys Catholic Church in Whanganui and depicts St Joseph, husband of the Virgin Mary, holding a lily. The lily is a symbol for St Mary; the lily in the hand of St Joseph recalls the purity of his wife.

Made of cream satin backed with Italian cloth, the banner is edged with two rows of gold braid. The figure of Saint Joseph is in satin, and padded to create a three dimensional effect. His face, hands and feet are painted on card and glued to the figure. His robe is of purple satin and the drape is in cloth-of-gold, backed with soft green satin. His clothing is adorned with sequins and gold bindings and the whole is set within a decorative gold braid lozenge. The banner hangs from a wooden pole with gilded knobs at each end and a gold suspension cord.

This banner was brought out on the feast of St Joseph.
