Brief Description |
Public school (ex) pupils enrolled for training with Richard O Jarrett. A group of seven men dressed in gymnasium briefs are posing, four standing to show their medals; two are sitting on wooden chairs with their arms crossed and the last man is sitting on a low stool with his right leg bent and his hands clasped on his knee.
This is one of a collection of photographs collected by Richard Jarrett, a well-known exponent of the breathing and exercise regime developed by Eugen Sandow. He was appointed by the Wanganui Education Board as an Honorary Instructor, and was employed to teach breathing exercises to schools within the district. He also ran the Wanganui School of Physical Culture at Sandow Hall in lower St Hill Street in the early 20th century and was employed as the Physical Education Instructor at the Winter School in 1904.
