Name/Title TABUA, WHALE TOOTH NECKLACE
Brief Description This Fijian ceremonial whale tooth necklace, or tabua, is made of a Sperm Whale tooth with a pointed tip, perforated at the tip and at both sides of the hollow base for a suspension cord. The tooth is yellow in colour and polished; the colour is the result of anointing with coconut oil and turmeric. The cord is made of two-ply twisted sennit; several of the strands of sennit are coloured black. A rusted nail is pierced through a knot in the cord.
