Name/Title HANGING, WALL
Brief Description This appliqued wall hanging is sewn in shades of red, blue, ochre and cream on an unbleached cotton background. Traditional patterns include scrolls, tiles, Arabic script and mosaics.

The wall hanging was brought back from Cairo by Dr Howard Christie in 1912. Howard Christie married Miss Marshall from Putiki. Neither of these families remain in Wanganui.

The wall hanging came into the possession of Miss Josephine Duncan, formerly of Totarapuka in Whanganui and later hung on the landing wall of Miss Duncan's Somme Parade flat.

Production Notes Applique craft in Egypt is practised by tentmakers found on Kheiymiya Street in Cairo. The craft was traditionally practised by nomadic arabs who used the applique work to decorate the interior of their tents.
