Name/Title SOUVENIR; SHELL CASE, SERVICE CAP ASHTRAY, WORLD WAR I
Brief Description This cut-down brass German shell case is made into a souvenir ashtray shaped like a military service cap with the regimental shield of the Essex Regiment, an infantry unit of the British Army that saw active service from 1881 to 1958. Members of the regiment were recruited from across the county of Essex. Its origins were with the 56th Regiment of Foot from 1755. Today its lineage is continued by the Royal Anglian Regiment.

The 56th Foot, together with the 12th, 39th and 48th Regiments, was awarded the battle honour "Gibraltar, 1779-83", with the right to bear on its Colour a "Castle and Key" with the motto "Montis Insignia Calpe" (the sign of the Rock of Calpe - Calpe being the ancient name for Gibraltar). The Key is symbolic of Gibraltar being the key to the Mediterranean. The "Castle and Key" continue to be part of the badge of the Royal Anglian Regiment.
