Name/Title ILLUMINATED ADDRESS; To Mr William Holden
Brief Description Illuminated address from members of the Harmonic Society of Wanganui to William Holden, Conductor from 1879 to 1884. Written by hand in black ink onto a large sheet of quality art paper, the address is illustrated with a Maori pataka in a panel at left and bulrushes at upper left and right. The opening words of the address are highly decorated in blue, red and black and have illustrations of ferns behind them.

"To Mr W Holden/Wanganui/Dear Sir/We the undersigned Members of the Harmonic Society of Wanganui have the pleasure of asking your acceptance of a small purse of sovereigns/You have been the Conductor of the Choral Practices of the Society for the now long period of five years: You have during that period shown yourself not only to be enthusiastically devoted to Music, but also to be in possession of the knowledge and the ability which are necessary to the position you have filled./You have shown yourself in possession of qualities not less necessary to one who wields the baton an affability of manner - a considerateness of regards, towards all - and a power of control, to which, it has been to the Members of the Society never unpleasant to yield; and through these, the meetings of a society devoted to the culture of Music have always been married by harmony and goodwill; through these also you have won that sincere regard the expression of which the Members of the Society would put in the shape of the little gift above named; this, be so good as to accept./The Society trusts that you may long be spared yourself to enjoy the Art to which you are so devoted and the knowledge of which you have for so long a time generously put at their service./We are dear Sir/Yours very truly/Wanganui June 1884 ...".
