Name/Title CANE; HMS FOUDROYANT
Brief Description This cane, or walking stick, is made of dark brown oak wood, taken from a ship's plank of HMS "Foudroyant", one of Vice Admiral Lord Nelson's ships of the line. It is carved with a flared handle, flattened oval in cross-section becoming round in cross-section mid-way down the shaft. The cane tapers from handle to base.

HMS "Foudroyant" was an 80-gun third rate ship of the Royal Navy, built at Plymouth Dock and launched on 31 March 1798. "Foudroyant" served Nelson as his flagship from 6 June 1799 until the end of June 1801.

She had a long and valuable career, although she was not involved in any major fleet action. She provided important service to numerous admirals throughout her 17 years of active service.
