The Trafalgar medal was struck by Matthew Boulton of the Soho Mint in Birmingham, for presentation to the survivors of the battle of Trafalgar. It commemorated the great naval battle of Trafalgar, when Vice Admiral Lord Nelson in HMS "Victory" lead an English naval fleet of 26 ships to a resounding victory against a combined French and Spanish fleet of 33 ships. Nelson lost his life in this battle.
On the obverse is embossed a bust of Lord Nelson in naval uniform, left profile, with text embossed around the rim that reads, "HORATIO VISCOUNT NELSON. K. B. DUKE OF BRONTE.&.". On the reverse is embossed a scene of ships at sea during the battle with the embossed text, "ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY" around the rim. On the exergue is "TRAFALGAR/ OCT 21. 1805". On the edge of the rim is inscribed "FROM M. BOULTON TO THE HEROES OF TRAFALGAR".
Made of pewter, this medal was awarded to James Campbell of HMS "Africa".
