This large bronze medallion depicts King Canute who reigned in England from 1016 to 1032; it is obviously a replica. The obverse shows the head of King Canute facing right, wearing a spiked crown, within a circle; around the circumference is an unreadable inscription with the date 1022 at the top. On the reverse is the standing figure of King Canute with arms outstretched holding a sword and a grail; around the circumference is an unreadable inscription. The medallion is surmounted by a crown. It is contained in a homemade box that is recessed to accommodate it.
Canute, or Cnut, was King of England from 1016, King of Denmark from 1018 and King of Norway from 1028. He invaded England in 1013 with his father, Sweyn, king of Denmark, and was acclaimed king in 1014 by his army. Canute defeated King Edmund II in 1016, and became king of all England on Edmund's death. He succeeded his brother Harold as king of Denmark in 1018 and became King of Norway in 1028 through conquest.
