|
Brief Description |
This Bible is bound in black textured leather with the title printed in gold on the spine. It includes both the Old and New Testaments printed on fine paper. A hand-written inscription shows that the Bible was a gift, along with the names and birth dates of the owners.
This Bible was given to Francis William Hacket while staying at the Old Wanganui Hospital, located on the bank of the Whanganui River, in 1885 when he was 18 years old. It was given to him by Mrs Harper, sister of Major Harper of Wellington.
Francis William Hacket was born on 17 September 1867. He lived on St Johns Hill and worked as a horse trainer, although he was declared a bankrupt in 1890 and again in 1891. Francis married Mary Elizabeth Shaw (who was born on 12 September 1867) in 1892. Together they had a daughter, Amelia born on 18 May 1893, who later married William George Goldsack. Amelia donated the Bible to the Whanganui Regional Museum.
