Brief Description |
This bookmark of woven silk was found within a Bible donated at the same time as the bookmark. "Honour Thy Father And Thy Mother" is woven into a ribbon surrounding a starred tree down the centre of the bookmark; the top has cathedral spires and a cross; the bottom has "IHS" woven into a rose circle and surrounded by ecclesiastical motifs. Colours are red, yellow and green on a white background.
The Bible was given to Francis William Hacket while staying at the old Wanganui Hospital, located on the bank of the Whanganui River, in 1885 at the age of 18. It was given to him by Mrs Harper, sister of Major Harper of Wellington.
Francis William Hacket was born on 17 September 1867. He lived on St Johns Hill and worked as a horse trainer; he was declared bankrupt in 1890 and again in 1891. Francis married Mary Elizabeth Shaw (who was born on 12 September 1867) in 1892. Together they had a daughter, Amelia, born on 18 May 1893, who later married William George Goldsack. Amelia donated the bookmark to the Museum's collection.
