Name/Title PHOTOGRAPH; Horses and wagons on the Whanganui Town Bridge.
Brief Description A black and white photograph of the R.T. Batley's shipment arriving into Whanganui to travel to London. Photograph taken from the Durie Hill entrance to the bridge as multiple horses pull wagons across it, each carrying 32 bales of wool.
The wool was carted from Moawhango to Whanganui and then shipped to London via sailing ship. The steamships at the wharf are the S.S. Stormbird (on left) and the S.S. Oreti. The sailing ship on the left is possibly the "Alexa" which was owned by Hatrick & Company. The four-wheeled vehicle amongst the horse carts is a private phaeton carrying a couple into town. The notice on the bridge stated that trotting or cantering across the bridge was not allowed.
Photograph mounted on cream backing card.
