Name/Title PHOTOGRAPH; Upokongaro Hotel after an explosion
Brief Description A black and white photograph showing the damaged Upokongaro Hotel. The photograph shows a two-storeyed building with broken windows. Two people are visible in the doorway, one unidentified man standing, and one seated on a chair identified as George Bisley, a local gorse grubber.
This photograph was taken after bushfeller Jimmy Laurent placed a charge of gelignite in front of the hotel after being rebuffed by one of the women who worked at the hotel.

A mexican bush feller, Jimmy Launent was in the habit / of staying at the hotel to spend his cheque and became / infatuated with one of the ladies of the hotel, but / on one occassion after his money had all been spent / she told him his attentions were no longer welcome. / In a fit of spite he blew up the hotel / and shortly afterwards committed suicide / by jumping into the Wanganui River
