Brief Description |
A sepia-washed photograph of M Vertelli crossing the Whanganui River on a tightrope, 31 October 1867. The tightrope was a wire used for swaying punts over the river. Vertelli may be seen nearing the end of the crossing, directly in front of the crowd outside A Cass Clothing Establishment.
A large crowd is gathered on the west bank to watch the event. Note materials for bridge construction in foreground. In the distance Putiki Pa is visible.
