Name/Title PHOTOGRAPH; The Barquentine "Alexa" after Colliding with the South Mole
Brief Description A black and white photograph of the vessel "Alexa" after it collided with the South Mole while entering the Whanganui river mouth. The photograph was taken from on the South Mole looking down to the ship, which is pressed hard against the mole. South Beach can be seen on the right with the township in the background on the left. The photograph has been mounted on brown backing card.

On 12 Dec 1910 the Barquentine "Alexa" (300 tons) attempted to cross the bar at the mouth of the Whanganui River and ran into the breakwater on the sea side, in a dangerous position, carrying away a considerable portion of the breakwater. The Lighter "Thistle" (77 tons) went to the rescue and succeeded finally, after breaking one line, in towing her to a place of safety.
