Name/Title PHOTOGRAPH; The Barquentine "Alexa" after colliding with the South Mole
Brief Description A sepia toned photograph of the vessel "Alexa" after it collided with the South Mole while entering the Whangnaui River Mouth. The South Mole stretches down the right side of the image, with part having collapsed due to the impact. The ship is upright and floats hard against the side of the mole, with men looking down at her. Photograph has been mounted on to brown backing card.

The Barquentine "Alexa" (300 tons) on 12 Dec 1910 attempted to cross the bar at the mouth of the Whanganui River and ran into the breakwater at the mouth on the sea side, in a dangerous position, carrying away a considerable portion of the breakwater. The Lighter "Thistle" (77 tons) went to the rescue and succeeded finally, after breaking one line, in towing her to a place of safety.
