Name/Title PHOTOGRAPH; Damage to the South Mole after collision with the "Alexa"
Brief Description A black and white photograph of the damage to the South Mole after the barquentine "Alexa" collided with it while entering the Whanganui River Mouth. The view looks down the railway lines of the South Mole, which is significantly crooked due to the impact of the ship. Two men are crouched down working with wire near the collision site, is poorly supported by damaged and crooked pylons. A section of the North Mole can be seen in the background on the right.
Photograph has been mounted onto brown backing card

The Barquentine "Alexa" (300 tons) on 12 Dec 1910 attempted to cross the bar at the mouth of the Whanganui River and ran into the breakwater at the mouth on the sea side, in a dangerous position, carrying away a considerable portion of the breakwater. The Lighter "Thistle" (77 tons) went to the rescue and succeeded finally, after breaking one line, in towing her to a place of safety.
