Name/Title CAMERA; DENTON CAMERA
Brief Description This Century Studio Camera, manufactured by Eastman Kodak, was used for decades by Whanganui photographer Frank Denton. Denton’s photographs are in every museum and library photograph collection in New Zealand and published in books and magazines world-wide. His postcards of the Whanganui River were posted all over the world. The camera is a square, walnut wood varnished case, with brass fittings, divided into halves. The rear half houses has the plate holder (210mm x 160mm) mounted on the back and the front half has a large, 100mm diameter brass and ground glass lens by J H Dallymeyer, mounted on the front. The lens is covered by a black leather lens cap, lined with black velvet. The two halves of the camera are joined by a dark brown card concertina tunnel. A clear plastic shutter release tube with a black rubber bulb is attached to the front right proper side of the front half of the camera. Both halves of the camera are mounted on notched brass rails on a wooden table and can be wound backwards and forwards along the rails. The table is in turn mounted on a wooden frame that sits on a black painted cast iron triangular base on three rubber wheels. The frame can be wound up and down vertically between two vertical, square wooden posts mounted on the triangular base.

Century
The Century Camera Company was founded in 1900 by three former employees of the Rochester Optical Company, namely, J. M. Walmsley, president, G. E. Mosher, and G. J. MacLaughlin. They first occupied space at 65 Atlantic Avenue along with Vogt and the Rochester Lens Company. In 1903 their stock was acquired by George Eastman and the company was moved to 12 Caledonia Avenue. In 1905 the Century Company took over the Rochester Panoramic Camera Company, maker of the Cirkut camera, which had been patented in 1904 by Johnston, Reavill, and Brehm. In 1907 they became the Century Division of Eastman Kodak. They were merged into Folmer Graflex, but the name "Century" continued to exist until 1920.
