Name/Title SAMPLER; E GREGORY
Brief Description This sampler on off-white fine wool has pictures of grand buildings and floral motifs, all delicately hand stitched in fine cotton threadsof greens, browns, blues, pink and cream.

This piece was made in England by E Gregory in 1820. While we don’t know who E Gregory was, if she came to New Zealand or why she created this beautiful piece of needlework, it is an excellent example of a craft that has been popular with women for hundreds of years. For new migrants to New Zealand, stitching samplers could be a reminder of family and friends left behind, or a way of making a new home more comfortable.
