Brief Description |
Two-piece ensemble of jacket and skirt is made of striped cream silk with a self-stripe resulting from different weave and/or colour. The hip-length fitted jacket has a round bound collarless neckline and a centre front opening with knife-pleated strips inserted into front panel. The jacket is fully interlined (the bodice with a heavy cotton and the peplum a lighter cotton). There are hook and eye fastenings down the centre front. The jacket has shaped seams shoulder to hem with inserts; one pleated strip approximately 30mm wide; another folded plain binding. There is no evidence of boning in the jacket. The sleeves are a shaped two piece sleeve, piped at armhole; cuff finished with pleated section and insert to match front opening. The Skirt has a back curved hem finished with 50mm band. The curved hem forms a train which is decorated with a pleated trim with bias band of self fabric plus piping. This trim is repeated on separate train (loose, but stitched at the waistband). The skirt is fully interlined.
This wedding gown was worn by Caroline Phoebe Newing who married Samuel Toy Beard in the St Johns Church at Matarawa on 3 June 1880.
