PAINTING; Durie Hill from No. 2 Line
|
Brief Description |
This water colour by itinerant painter Christopher Aubrey shows a view of Whanganui from Durie Hill.
Two men walk down the unpaved road that is No. 2 Line (now Portal Street) towards the Whanganui River. A man riding a brown horse is travelling up the road towards them. On the left of the men walking is a cut-away bank with trees and bush on it. To the right is a post and wire fence in front of a broad paddock with sheep in it. Below the paddock in Durie Vale is a large house with a silver roof, surrounded by trees. Other paddocks and Bastia Hill are beyond them. A small stretch of the river with the west bank of the river and the town of Wanganui are in the distance. Mt Taranaki (Mt Egmont) is on the horizon, under a lightly clouded sky.
