Name/Title MEMORIAL PLAQUE; SOLDIERS MEMORIAL FROM ST JOHNS CHURCH, MATARAWA
Brief Description A large wooden memorial plaque to the memory of men of the Royal Artillery, 58th Regiment and HMS Calliope was erected in about 1850 by the officers, non-commissioned officers and privates of the Royal Artillery and 58th Regiment. Originally installed in Christ Church, the main Anglican church in Whanganui, the plaque was replaced by a brass plaque in 1894. It languished in the old Drill Hall for some years before being installed in St Johns Church at Matarawa, near Whanganui.

The inscription on the wooden plaque reads:
SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF THE FOLLOWING MEN OF THE ROYAL ARTILLERY 58TH REGIMENT AND H.M.S. CALLIOPE
GUNNER WILLIAM CONNOLLY - DIED 21ST JULY 1847 OF WOUNDS, RECEIVED IN ACTION - AGED 29 YEARS
PRIVATE JOHN MCMORAN DROWNED, 18TH JANUARY 1847, AGED 21 YEARS
PRIVATE WILLIAM WEBSTER DIED 26TH FEBRUARY 1847 AGED 22 YEARS
CORPORAL DENNIS NEVILLE - DROWNED 30TH MARCH 1847 AGED 21 YEARS
PRIVATE SAM SCULTHORPE - KILLED 10TH MAY 1847 AGED 26 YEARS
PRIVATE WILLIAM WELLER - KILLED IN ACTION 19TH JULY, 1847 AGED 30 YEARS
SEAMAN JOHN CLATWORTHY - DROWNED 30TH MARCH, 1847 AGED 22 YEARS
