Brief Description |
From Fiji, the pandanus totokia, or the pineapple club, was designed to pierce the enemy’s skull with a hefty blow of its heavy head, driving the point inwards. Made of dark red-brown hardwood, it has a rounded knob on the base of the straight handle, which is circular in cross-section, and extends to a curved neck joining the head. The head is also circular in cross-section and has been carved with many raised points around the circumference and hence the resemblance to a pineapple. A beak, or pointed extension of wood, is carved in the middle of the head. The handle is bound with alternating bands of yellow and brown sennit fibre. The lower portion of the handle is carved with a geometric pattern.
