Brief Description |
This Morant War Hospital medallion is a circular .925 silver medal with a raised edge and circular bail. On the obverse is engraved the inscription, "XMAS / 1918 /PAX''. Inscribed on the reverse is '' MORANT WAR HOSPITAL / BROCKENHURST" and hallmarks. New Zealand Army nurses were sent to Morant House which was used as a hospital for troops injured in World War I.
This medal was presented to Sister Vida Mary Katie MacLean, RRC, a nurse and a New Zealand Army nursing servicewoman.
In 1770 Edward Morant, using some of the vast wealth that flowed from his family estates in Jamaica, purchased Brockenhurst House, an Elizabethan farmhouse, for £6,400. He rebuilt it in a Georgian style, laid out avenues in the grounds and acquired adjacent land. In the 19th century the railway came to Brockenhurst, increasing a large number of holiday visitors and the local population. In World War I Brockenhurst was a convalescence centre for wounded troops, particularly from India and New Zealand.
