Brief Description This sepia-toned carte de visite photograph is of Captain George Buck. It is a formal studio portrait of Buck standing in his Imperial Army uniform with his hand resting on the back of a carved chair, a studio prop. His uniform cap with his Regiment number "14" rests on the seat of the chair.

Captain George Buck of Wellington, of the 14th Regiment of Foot, or the Buckinghamshire Regiment (later the Prince of Wales's Own), and the 65th Regiment (2nd Yorkshire) North Riding Regiment of Foot, commanded the 1st Division of 150 men to advance on Ngati Ruanui villages and Te Ngutu-o-te-manu (Beak of the Bird) alongside Colonel McDonnell and Major Von Tempksy. He was killed in action at Te Ngutu-o-te-manu, near Kaponga in South Taranaki, on 7 September 1868.
