Brief Description This fossil neck vertebra is from Mauisaurus haasti, an elasmosaur (a long necked plesiosaur) that lived during the late Cretaceous period, around 80 to 69 million years ago, in what later became New Zealand. It was the largest plesiosaur, and perhaps the largest marine reptile, in New Zealand waters at the time. This fossil was excavated from the Mangahouanga Stream, Hawkes Bay, in the mid 1980s while the donor was working with Joan Wiffen.
