Walter Buller was born on 9 October 1838 at the Wesleyan Mission, Newark, at Pakanae, Hokianga, in the Bay of Islands, the son of Reverend James Buller and his wife Jane Tonkin Martin.
Walter Buller worked as an interpreter, magistrate, ornithologist and lawyer. He was New Zealand's best-known nineteenth century ornithologist. Buller is known for writing "A History of the Birds of New Zealand" published in 1873, and in particular, the enlarged edition published in 1888, illustrated with J G Keuleman's chromolithographic plates. His titles included the C.M.G. and R.R.S. as Residing Magistrate. Buller married Charlotte Mair on 24 April 1862; the couple had four children. He died on 19 July 1906 at Fleet, Hampshire, England.
