This sepia-toned carte de visite photograph is of Thomas Mercer Copeland. It is a studio portrait of his head and shoulders printed in an oval. Copeland wears a dark jacket open over a white shirt and a black buttoned waistcoat. He has a full moustache and long beard and waving cropped hair. The mount is embossed with "W. J. HARDING".
Copeland was born in Fermanagh, North Ireland, in 1856 and arrived in New Zealand with his parents on the "Helvellyn" in 1863. Aged 24, he married Emma Wise, daughter of William Wise, a gardener, in May 1881. They had seven children: four sons and three daughters. Copeland worked as Sanitary Inspector for the Wanganui Corporation. Copeland Street is probably named after him. He died 0n 31 February 1930 at 73 years of age, at Liffiton Street in Whanganui.
