Bain was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, the son of David and Mary Bain. He spent some time in Dunedin during the 1861 gold rush. He arrived in Whanganui in the 1860s. Aged 33, he married Elizabeth McLaren (born in Comrie, Scotland) in April 1872, with whom he had five daughters. Bain worked as a baker for John Hurley until he established his own business in 1873 on Victoria Avenue, Whanganui. He also worked as wholesale and retail confectioner, and bread and biscuit baker. His son David took over his father's business in 1895. James Baker Bain died November 1891.
