Brief Description |
This silk scarf has maps of Europe printed on both sides and dates from World War II. It was probably made for British and Allied Royal Air Force pilots, in case they were shot down over enemy territory while raiding, and needed help in evading capture.
One side has a a detailed map of Bulgaria, Turkey and Greece, with a close-up of Crete. The other side is printed with a detailed map of Italy, Yugoslavia, Romania, Greece and Bulgari area. The background is white and is printed with black contour lines and names, red lines showing roads, and green lines showing international boundaries.
The key on the Italy side shows a scale of 1:3,000,000, and has a conversion chart from kilometres to English miles.
