This black and white panoramic photograph is of native bush at Bushy Park, Kai Iwi. Running beside the bush is a wire fence. The image is taken from a cleared paddock beside the reserve, looking towards the bush.
Bushy Park, 24 kilometre north-west of Whanganui, was first farmed by James Moore at the end of the 1860s. Of Moore’s three children, Frank was the only one to survive his parents. After his father’s death in 1892 he engaged well-known Hawkes Bay architect C T Natusch to design the present house. This was built in 1906 by Whanganui builders Russell & Bignell for £4,566. In 1923 Frank Moore commissioned R P Moore (no relation) to make several panoramas of the property.
The house stands amid 100 hectares of native bush, its quality evident in this panorama.
In 1960 Frank Moore deeded the property to the Royal Forest & Bird Protection Society. In 1995 the Society transferred ownership of the homestead, stables and surrounding land to an independent Trust. Bushy Park Trust takes responsibility for the maintenance and development of Bushy Park and is very active in managing and developing the Bushy Park predator-free native bird sanctuary and upgrading the amenities.
