Alfred Bailey was born in 1849 to parents Henry and Jane Bailey abd worked as a labourer in Whanganui. Alfred married Amelia Old in 1873 and they had the following children:

Ernest Walter born 1877, died in 1907 aged 29 years
James Edward born 1879, married Elizabeth Lucy Coombes in 1905, died in 1960 aged 80 years
Annie May born 1881, married Alfred Henry Bensley in 1903, died 1959 aged 77 years
Lilian Alice born 1882, died 1883 aged 7 months
Albert Henry born 1884, died in 1897 aged 29 years
Frederick Charles born 1888, died 1963 aged 74 years
Ellen Christina born 1891, unmarried, died 1934 aged 44 years
Cecil Elizabeth Ida born 1892, married Val Bernard Biggin in 1913
Herbert John born 1893, died 1944 aged 71 years
