Brief Description This large landscape painting in oils on canvas is of the Retaruke Reach on the Whanganui River. It was painted by T W Downes in 1896 on heavy canvas and mounted within an ornate gilded frame. You can see two men in a waka which has been poled to rest against the bushy banks of the river.
