Brief Description |
This large kauri wardrobe was retrieved from the summer residence in Castlecliff, Wanganui, of Alexander Hatrick, Mayor of Wanganui from 1897 to 1904. The wood is believed to have been sourced locally.
Alexander Hatrick is known for his riverboat service that helped develop a large tourist industry. It also provided transport to the interior for farmers, settlers and traders and carried stock, mails and supplies. The stately A. Hatrick & Co building on St Hill St in Wanganui was the hub of around 40 commercial activities, with Hatrick in control. He ran one of the largest commercial enterprises in New Zealand.
