Name/Title PHOTOGRAPH; James K Baxter at Jerusalem on the Whanganui River
Brief Description This black and white photograph is of New Zealand poet James Keir Baxter at Jerusalem on the Whanganui River. Published in the Wanganui Chronicle in the early 1970s, Baxter stands in the centre wearing a dark shirt, unbuttoned, and trousers with a belt and a crucifix around his neck. He has shoulder length hair and a beard. He is holding a lit cigarette and a box of cigarettes in his right hand. At left rear are two nuns dressed in white; at rear right is a boy, a young woman standing and part of a man standing holding a book. In the foreground are parts of two people's heads. People are outside standing on grass with trees in the background and branches overhead.

Over the years Whanganui has been home to a number of high profile New Zealanders. During the 1960s national attention focused on the Whanganui River settlement of Jerusalem (Hiruhārama) when major New Zealand literary figure Baxter made it his home.

During his time by the Whanganui River he produced some of his finest poetry. He also fought a running battle with authorities over the commune of young people that formed around him in the tranquil river village.

Described as a poet, social commentator, activist, alcoholic, devout Catholic and wannabe prophet, Baxter died in 1972 and, at his request, was buried at Jerusalem.
