Brief Description |
This oil on canvas painting is a portrait of Sir William Fox, a former Prime Minister of New Zealand. Fox is painted almost full length, dressed in a black long coat, tan trousers and waistcoat, a white shirt and a black floppy bow tie. A sailing ship and two rowing boats with passengers in them feature in a seashore scene behind Fox.
Fox was Premier of New Zealand from 20 May 1856 to 2 June 1856, from 12 July 1861 to 06 August 1862 and from 28 June 1869 to 10 September 1872.
The painting was commissioned by Mr Tom Barrett and was created post- mortem, based on a photograph of Fox, an example of which is held in the Alexander Turnbull Library. The work is encased in a wooden frame painted in gold.
