Brief Description Black and white carte de visite photograph of Mr William George Bassett (previously misidentified as Barrett) Modern reprint of studio portrait photograph of man standing beside decorative balistrade prop, with left hand resting on plinth. In the background on the right side there is a wall size image of a church steeple and woodland and on the left a hanging curtain. Man wears dark dress trousers, light toned suit jacket worn open over a white collared shirt and ribbon bow tie, with buttoned waistcoat, decorated with a pocketwatch. Man has a full moustache with short sideburns and hair styled with side parting. Modern reproduction of an original carte de visite photograph.

William George Bassett was born in New Plymouth in 1849, son of Sally and William. William Senior came to New Zealand on the 'Amelia Thompson' in 1841. William Junior came to Whanganui where he worked as timber merchant, contractor, and bridge builder. He also served as a Borough Councillor, member of the Harbour Board, member of the Hospital Board, and owned the river boat 'Annie'. William married Marry Elliot (born 1850) in New Plymouth in 1874 and they had the following children:
Florence Lydia born 1876, married Ernest Whiteley Hainsworth in 1899, died 1943 aged 65 years
Lewis Harold born 1882, married Eva May Rusden in 1906, died 1964 aged 83 years
Myra Mary born 1885

William died in 1928 aged 79 years, and Mary died 1941 aged 91 years.
