Brief Description |
The jug is a large buff-coloured earthenware jug. It has a bulbous body, rounded base, narrow tapered neck, flared mouth and handle. It has been covered in a reddish-brown slip.
This pottery jug is decorated in the Red Polished III ware style which dates from the Early Cypriote III to Middle Cypriote I periods, 2000 BC to 1800 BC.
The jug is one of a large collection of ceramics from Cyprus, donated to the Museum by Dr George Sleight, who lived in Cyprus and worked as Principal of the Morphou Teachers College. Later he became first Assistant Director and then Director of Education in Cyprus. After his retirement in 1956, Dr Sleight became Education Minister for Sierra Leone where he remained until at least 1961.
