Brief Description |
This letter is from the Honourable John Ballance to Mr Morgan, dated 17 August 1878. "My dear Mr Morgan / I have to thank you heartily for your kind & very encouraging letter, and news which pleased to find that you approved of our policy. It seems to have been well received by the country, though particular interests are [illeg] into opposition. The idea of "robbing a poor man of beer", is being circulated and encouraged by the Brewers who have come forward in the most philanthropic manner to see that their clients do not suffer!/ With kind regards, / I am yours truely / J. Ballance".
It is hand-written in black ink on a small sheet of good quality writing paper.
John Ballance was at this time a Member of the House of Representatives for Rangitikei, and a member of the cabinet of Sir George Grey, a former Governor, who was then Premier. Ballance became Premier in 1891, dying in office in 1893.
