VISION / Architectural Heritage is not against / development but seeks to encourage and / foster an awareness of heritage issued. This is / our future, Wanganui’s point of difference, / these buildings can be re-used, re-developed / and restored. However this requires initiative / from the council and us as a community / requesting a greater consultative process. The / phrases ‘too old’, ‘too costly’ and ‘too / impractical’ are all problems that can be / resolved through vision and thought, an / example of this is the Rutland complex. / HERITAGE NZ / We are barely 160 years old as a nation our / history is precious, buildings are an important / part of social history. If we carry on like this / there will be nothing to remind us of where we / are from. //

HISTORY / The Warehouse Stationery building was designed by / Thomas Henry Battle as a department store in 1914. The / original tenants were George and Kersley, the business was / later taken over by the DIC, consequently becoming Arthur / Barnett and closing its doors as a department store in 1992. / Recent tenants have included The Warehouse and / currently Warehouse Stationery. / WHATS SO IMPORTANT / ABOUT THE D.I.C? / *The DIC is a building of significant scale in the / streetscape and serves as a focal point in Victoria Ave. / * Constructed of native timbers throughout, it boasts / many examples of craftsmanship not available today, / such as pressed metal ceilings, a magnificent staircase, / stained glass windows and two large intact skylights that / could easily be re-instated. / * The DIC occupies a significant place in Wanganui’s / social history. Many people will remember the tearooms / that were operational until the 1960s and served as a / meeting place. Many other towns have lost these / buildings already, we haven’t yet… //

HERITAGE / PAST / In 1990 the Wanganui District Council commissioned / the Wanganui Heritage Study, the successful Mainstreet / project grew out of recommendations made in this / study. This initiative was recognized nationally. / PRESENT / * The study did establish a protective zoning for the / old town area, unfortunately progress has come to / a halt and buildings outside of this zone are at risk, / including the DIC which the Heritage study advised / should be protected. / * Demolition consents can be given with little or no / public consultation. / * Wanganui is becoming known as a heritage / destination with people traveling to see and / enjoy heritage buildings. Wanganui is being / promoted for this but increasingly we are losing the / very fabric of potential future economic / development. / * Our heritage is our point of difference. / FUTURE / We can either allow demolition to occur, threatening / our history and our children’s and become like many / other small towns, and victim to big box multi- / national companies swallowing our small local businesses. / OR / We have some vision and meet in the middle ground, / establishing Wanganui as a true heritage destination and / put in place guide lines for potential developers. //

OUR TOWN / This is your town, if you feel strongly about / any of the points raised in this pamphlet / PLEASE do something. You can help. / When these buildings are dust it is too / late. ACT NOW. / WHAT CAN YOU DO? / - Send in the tear off section of / this pamphlet / - Sign the petition currently / circulating / - Contact the Mayor at the / Wanganui District Council / - Contact a City Councillor / - Write letters to the editor at / the Wanganui Chronicle / - Discuss heritage issues with / friends and family / - Don’t leave it up to others / ARCHITECTURAL / HERITAGE / WHANGANUI / architectural_heritage_whanganui@yahoo.com //

SAVE THE D.I.C / Dear Chas Poynter, / I believe the D.I.C should be saved. / It is an important heritage building and / an important part of our CBD streetscape. / Please remove the demolition order. / Signed… / Printed Name… / Address… / Deliver to: 101 Guyton street, Wanganui. / Or mail to: W.D.C, PO BOX 637, Wanganui. / His Worship The Mayor / Wanganui District Council / PO BOX 637 / Wanganui
