Name/Title JUG, GRETNA GREEN
Brief Description A moulded earthenware jug with scenes of elopement and marriage at Gretna Green also has a poem inscribed on the side and a handle in the shape of a piece of wood. "GRETNA" is printed on both sides of the handle and the top of the pouring lip is shaped like a horse shoe.

The poem is titled "THE CEREMONY" and reads: "The dangers of the long night ride / are past / In Gretna Green they find themselves / at last / The friendly smith a while his work resigns / To hear from them the oft / repeated lines".

On one side a rider gallops his horse under trees and on the other side a blacksmith sits on an anvil under a tree reading from a prayerbook to a young man and woman who are being wed.

Printed on the base is: "THE RUNAWAY MARRIAGE / A ROMANTIC COUPLE / BEING MARRIED / BY THE BLACKSMITH OF / GRETNA GREEN". Also on the base is: "Burleigh Ware / BURGESS & LEIGH / EST (beehive image) 1851 / BURSLEM /ENGLAND".
