A black and white photograph showing the 'Foundation Stone' ceremony before construction is commenced on the Victoria Avenue Town Bridge in Whanganui. The photograph was taken from the riverbank and looks up to the town, where a large crowd has gathered for the ceremony. In the background are the H. Potto Saddler, Collar and Harness Maker, and the Rutland Stockade can be seen in the back left side. The ceremony was held at the corner of Victoria Avenue and Taupo Quay. The corner shop named 'Potts' later became the Larkins Boarding House, The Fosters Hotel and the Prince of Wales Hotel. Photograph is mounted on brown backing card. On November 9, the S.S. Wanganui arrived on the river with the Superintendant, Dr. Isaac Earl Featherstone. The visit was to lay the foundation ston. The town had declared a public holiday. Flags and bunting flew from all buildings and stretched across the Avenue. A large staging was erected from which the more important citizens of the town could view the proceedings in comfort and at least 1,000 were present.
