A sepia toned photograph showing a large group of people in attendance as the construction on the Town Bridge over the Whanganui River commences. Two ships are docked at the wharf on the right. Durie Hill and Putiki can be seen in the distance. In the foreground a couple sits in a horse drawn cart, and others are on horse back. The gathered crowd includes sailors, possibly from one of the two boats. Photograph is mounted on cream backing card.
