PHOTOGRAPH: The Stranded "Wanganella" at Wellington Harbour
|
Brief Description |
A black and white photo of the stranded "Wanganella". The photograph is taken looking at the side of the wrecked ship moored at Wellington Harbour, with the Whanganui tug "Kahanui" alongside. Wharf buildingds and the peak of a hill are visible in the background. The Wanganella was sailing to Wellington from Sydney. At 11.30pm on 19 January 1947 the captain thought the flashing lights of the Barret Reef Buoy were the guiding lights into Wellington Harbour and the vessel struck the rocks. The 400 passengers were taken off the next day, but the ship remained stuck for 18 days. After several unseccessful attemps to free her, the ship was finally set free by tugs on 6 February and then towed into Wellington Harbour. The vessel was not repaired until October 1948, and sailed to Sydney on December that year.
