Name/Title PHOTOGRAPH: The Stranded "Wanganella" at night in wellington Harbour
Brief Description A black and white photo of the stranded "Wanganella" at night in Wellington Harbour. The photograph is taken looking from the bow down the side of the wrecked ship with the Whanganui tug "Kahanui" alongside.
The Wanganella was sailing to Wellington from Sydney. At 11.30pm on 19 January 1947 the captain thought the flashing lights of the Barret Reef Buoy were the guiding lights into Wellington Harbour and the vessel struck the rocks. The 400 passengers were taken off the next day, but the ship remained stuck for 18 days. After several unseccessful attemps to free her, the ship was finally set free by tugs on 6 February and then towed into Wellington Harbour. The vessel was not repaired until October 1948, and sailed to Sydney on December that year.
