PHOTOGRAPH; SS Pelotas Wrecked on Castlecliff Beach
|
Brief Description |
A black and white photograph of SS "Pelotas" wrecked on Castlecliff Beach, Whanganui. The photograph looks across the sand to the hull of the ship stranded on the beach. Several spectators standon the beach looking at the wreck, while several more are climbing over the wreck. The North Mole is visible in the background. The barquentine vessel SS Pelotas was built in 1897. She had sailed from Eden in New South Wales, Australia, and was approaching the Whangnaui River Mouth on 12 June 1911 when the tug towing her failed to breast the heavy fresh from the river. Both vessels drifted over the bar where a heavy south-east wind blew the Pelotas onto the shore about a quarter-mile from the North Mole. The crew were all safe. The Pelotas was carrying a load of sleepers for the Gonville Tramways board. Note - newspaper reports the wreck occured on 12 June, but the photograph is dated 2 June in handwriting on reverse.
