PHOTOGRAPH: Laying tram lines in Whanganui
|
Brief Description |
A black and white photograph of men laying tram lines in Whanganui. The image shows a large group of workmen behind a large hole that has been dug in the road. One man is standing on top of a crane with bucket attachment, and a horse and dray can be seen to the right. The photograph may have been taken in the College Estate area with buildings, hills and trees in the background. The photo is mounted on thick brown card. Whanganui became the first provincial town to have a tramy way. Work began in December 1908 and the first tram began service the following year. By 1912, 12 trams were operating around the city. The last tram service was on 24 September 1950, when the transport system was replaced by buses.
