|
Brief Description |
A black and white photograph of men laying tram lines in Victoria Avenue, Whanganui. The photograph was taken low to the ground and looks along the road surface of Victoria Avenue, which has been dug up to allow for the installation of the tram rails. A group of workmen stand to teh right of the lines, and two men wearing suits stand on the left looking at the work. The avenue is lined with shops and Durie hill is visible in the background. The photo is mounted on thick green card. Whanganui became the first provincial town to have a tramy way. Work began in December 1908 and the first tram began service the following year. By 1912, 12 trams were operating around the city. The last tram service was on 24 September 1950, when the transport system was replaced by buses.
